José Dominguez guitar (1956 Málaga) restoration

A little history...

He has the workshop on Muro de San Julián Street, since "the nationals" entered (as he said). His father, Francisco Dominguez Valderrama was a student and then successor of Antonio de Lorca Ramírez (Málaga 1890-1910), the last guitarist of the Lorca, known for being the best guitar builders of the late nineteenth century, in Malaga.

It is said of Lorca, that due to the economic boom in which he was, he dedicated himself to the guitar collecting of other authors, neglecting the manufacture of his own label and that even in the decline to which he had been doomed, magnificent guitars are found, Departures from the hands of Francisco Domínguez Valderrama, true continuator of the Lorca saga
In 1923, the son of Lorca wanted to remove the workshop and Francisco Dominguez Valderrama settled in Arco de la Cabeza, until in 1938, he settled permanently in the Wall of San Julián with his son JOSÉ DOMINGUEZ. José Dominguez (Pepe, for friends and compadre for me), took over the workshop, just fifteen square meters, which was not an obstacle for guitars to leave the United States, England, Brazil, Japan, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland, France, Austria and a long etc ...
Many guitars built by him also stayed in Malaga, in houses such as the Temboury, Eugenio Chicano, the painter Bernabé Fernández Canivell, Dr. Díaz Recio ... He worked the guitar with noble woods and perfectly dry and natural, for years (at no time he used artificially dried wood). One day, Alejandro Heredia appeared there to buy a guitar and the magic caught him, staying since then in the workshop to learn and as a teacher's assistant ... Fantastic Alejandro, I give faith. From the human quality of José Dominguez, you can tell the many friends who went through his workshop and enjoyed the evenings and gatherings that were held there.

The professors of the Conservatories of Music, first María Cristina located in the Plaza de San Francisco, and then the Superior Conservatory in the Ejido (Málaga), used to meet in the afternoon, when they finished classes in that small corner that Pepe made great , with his way of being cozy and endearing. I wanted to pay a small tribute to this great artist and a better person, who has long since left us, but will always remain in our hearts and memories.

The guitar to restore ...

Below you will find an image gallery that will show the restoration of this guitar (jewel of the famous Malaga builder of lutes and guitars) carried out in our workshop.

It is a flamenco guitar with the bottom and curly maple hoops, spruce pine top, cedar handle, ebony fingerboard, holy stick shovel and ebony bridge, which has undoubtedly lived better times ... And it is that 60 years of use and bad repairs have managed to hide the true piece of craftsmanship that it really is.

State in which the guitar arrived at the workshop ...
